Gluten Free News Round-Up: August 4th-10th

Schar’s Quality of Life Questionnaire
Although not so much news, I felt it was important to share this. This survey from Schar is assessing the use of Social Supports in those with Celiac Disease, as well as their overall quality of life. This, to me, is a very important area of research needed for those with CD!

Celiac Disease Patients With Ongoing Intestine Damage at Lymphoma Risk
This recent study found that indiviual’s whose intestines did not heal after diagnosis, whether because of non compliance to a gluten free diet or other factors, were more at risk of developing Lymphoma (a type of blood cancer) than those whose intestinal villi did heal. This is one of the first times intestinal damage was linked to a risk factor in those with CD.

Gluten-free Beer Tastes Grea, Makes Money
One brand of gluten free beer, Omission Beer is making big waves in an economic market where other beer companies are struggling to make money. There are many articles coming out recently about the value of the gluten free market, but it is especially interesting to see that this market sometimes does better than the non gluten free market. It makes sense, but it’s interesting.

Weird Dating Sites: From Gluten-Free Singles To Hot Sauce Passions, There’s Something For You
This Huffington Post Photo series is more a satire on unique dating sites, and although not entirely gluten free related it does mention the recently released gluten free Singles dating site. What is your opinion on this site? As I said on a recent post about this that Jules Gluten Free’s made on facebook:

I think it totally opens up dating opportunities for those who don’t like talking about their condition. However, it could be limiting. I started dating my now husband before going gluten free, and it has been something to bring us so much closer together. It’s one thing to both have a need to be gluten free, and it’s another to know someone values and appreciates you enough to not eat gluten around you, accommodate your needs, etc.”

One final FYI: There will be no news post next week as I will be away!
