What do you eat when nothing appeals?

I’m having a BIG problem lately: Barely anything is pleasing my tastebuds. See, three weeks ago I was pretty sick. I had a fever, aches and pains, sinus infection, congestion, fatigue, and cough for a few days. The cough lingered, as did the sinus infection. Since then, I’ve been craving mostly fresh foods. Strawberries with whip cream, caprese salads with fresh tomato and basil, giant heaping salads, sushi and sashimi, apples, bananas, cucumbers, and the like.

The problem? Not even they are entirely pleasing me or appealing to me. In fact, I am being turned off in general to food. Mushrooms? They smell rotten and taste like rubber (literally). Greek Salad Dressing? It smells like cleaning fluid. Risotto? The texture is hard to tackle without thinking I am eating baby food (which I’ve tried). My senses are entirely out of whack, which leaves me looking a little bit like this:

Okay, that’s an old picture but really… I just don’t get it. Now, before anyone jumps to any conclusions I’ll be the first to say it: NO I AM NOT PREGNANT. I promise. Sometimes there is something that hits the spot; a single bite of strawberries that hits the right section of tastebuds or lox rolled around cream cheese but only when eaten at 11am in Tampa Florida. Most times though I am totally not amused. The cravings that my mind has don’t match my stomach’s cravings, I want to eat everything and nothing as the same time… And this isn’t like me. Most times I can find pleasure in every bite if I take the time. I’ve had these periods before, but never this long and it’s starting to drive me crazy.
So, as I sit here eating my giant salad and corn tortilla Mexican veggie pizza that just aren’t hitting the spot I ask my fair readers:
What do you eat when nothing appeals?
How do you get out of these food ruts and find pleasure in your food again?

  1. Oy, great question. Sometimes I go back a year or two mentally to think of the recipes or meals I made then . . . Often it’s time I visited a friend, or went out! It’s hard to eat out as a celiac, but I got the best idea for Indian food eating out my last trip to Dublin: Red Lentil Dal. And I’ve made a bunch of different whirls on it.

But right in the moment, I’ll often close my eyes, and think what smells good. Somehow, smell bypasses that “augh” rut.

    Cheers!

    1. CJ, I think it had a lot to do with smell actually! I still have an ongoing sinus infection, but am slowly able to smell again and food has become a lot better! Thanks for your input and feedback. It gets hard not to get stuck in a rut. 🙂
