Locally Gluten Free: Long Island Spirits Vodka

I’m back from vacation, and figured I would kick us off with a post about something more local than my vacation was. Something to remind me of what Long Island has to offer, and which I often over look.

For those not familiar with Long Island, New York it’s an island located east of New York City nestled right under Connecticut. The island itself is shaped like a fish, and is about 118 miles long and 23 miles wide at it’s widest. The upper tail of the fish is called the North Fork, and makes up some of the greatest wine country in the Northeast as well as some of the best scenery of the Island.

This summer I’ve been making an effort to spend more time out in this area, as it serves for a beautiful place for a day trip and escape from it all. We’ve gone to about 8 different wineries along with multiple different shops, but there is one thing that is rather unique: Long Island Spirits. The distillery opened in 2007, and is home to a line of vodka’s called LiV Vodka as well as a line of whiskey. We made it a task to visit this tasting room, specifically because the vodka’s are all gluten free, and made from local sustainable crops. While I had heard about the place online, I was thrilled to be greeted by this sign at the entrance.
The tasting room is in a charmingly bright room, with large picture windows that over look the potato fields as well as a window that looks into a small distillery room. The tasting bar runs the whole length of the room, and common with the tradition out there does not have any seats. For a total of 9$ you can try three of their 8 vodkas and take the shot glass home. As I said they also have a whisky menu but I don’t recall the number of tastes you get, or the price, because these are not considered gluten free. Each patron is limited to one tasting, which makes perfect sense given the alcohol content. The vodka’s themselves come in the following flavors, original, lemon, lime, orange, strawberry, raspberry, and espresso. The fruity flavors are dubbed as “Sorbetta”, simply because they are very sweet and dessert like similar to sorbet.
I’ll admit, I am not the biggest vodka person, let alone a shots person, because I feel most have a very intense burn to them and that simply isn’t my thing. LIV tastings are abou a shot for each flavor, so I was worried about not enjoying my experience. I was so wrong! These were darn good. The fruity flavoring is a big bonus, as they were flavorful enough to cut out a bit of the burn. I think there is also sugar added, which brings them in line with their dessert name sake sorbet, and also helps with the burn. In addition, the flavor themselves doesn’t seem as fake as other products on the market, they are clean and simple. Out of all of them, the Strawberry Sorbetta vodka is my favorite because it tastes so fresh, with the Espresso as my least favorite because it was just way too overpowering. While I obviously didn’t try them, I also heard that the whiskey’s are equally as delicious. I took home a bottle of the Strawberry vodka which will make some delicious drinks to savor, and have gone back once more since the initial experience. I’m sure it won’t be the last time. So, if you enjoy adult beverages I would highly suggest visiting. I mean just look at this view:

You really can’t go wrong with a beautiful day, a beautiful view, and a few sips of some local alcohol!
