Gluten Free News Round-Up: October 21st-27th

So the East Coast is prepping for another Hurricane, or what many of the weather channels are calling it the Perfect Storm, now named ‘Frakenweine”. That being said, I may be without power, and thus posting ability for some days. For now, here is this week’s round up including a few Halloween links!

Refractory Celiac Disease: Unlocking the Origin of Aberrant Lymphocytes
This article discusses new research into the field of Refractory Celiac Disease, specifically related to Abnormal intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs). “A number of nutritional factors influence the development and spread of IELs, especially vitamins and their active metabolites, such as retinoic acid, and phytochemicals such as ligands of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor from cruciferous vegetables. However, when IELs activate and expand uncontrollably in response to chronic inflammatory conditions in the gut, they trigger mucosal damage, which can lead to celiac disease, and in some cases, to malignant cancers.”

Jennifer Esposito Forced to Leave Blue Bloods Due to Celiac Disease Diagnosis
After collapsing on stage and being diagnosed, Esposito’s doctor requested she work a lighter schedule. CBS’s response was   to claim she was “Not actually ill”. Jennifer Esposito’s recent Celiac Disease diagnosis and resulting unpaid leave of absence is an unfortunate but great example of discrimination and misunderstanding of the Celiac Disease Diagnosis.
