Happy March! March is National Social Work Month here in the United States, so happy month to all my social work readers. You can check out my other work over at Social Justice Solutions.

Celiac Disease Patients Have Higher Rates of Irritable Bowel like Symptoms
The discussed study looked at the connection between adherence to a gluten free diet for those diagnosed with Celiac Disease and their rates of experiencing Irritable Bowel like Symptoms. As suspected, those with CD experience more IB like symptoms than controls, even more so when they are not adhering to a gluten free diet. I don’t know if this research proves anything new per say, but it is more evidence behind the benefit of a gluten free diet.

Celiac Disease and IBD may Raise Migraine Risk
According to recent research conducted by Dr. Green at Columbia, those with Celiac Disease, Gluten Sensitivity, and IBD are more likely to experience Migraines than the general population. In addition, those with Celiac Disease are more likely to experience severe and debilitating Migraines. Although not the focus of the study, it did seem that the frequency and severity of migraines decreased slightly after starting a gluten free diet.

Non-celiac Gluten Sensitivity: Fact or Fiction?
Keeping in theme with the recent thoughts published by many on gluten sensitivity, this article provides some research evidence that is being discussed in the argument. I personally think the topic is tricky, as even those without negative symptoms from gluten experience health benefits (weight loss etc.) from going on a gluten free diet, but that just like with lactose intolerance I feel there has to be some sort of lower response to gluten. I’ll definitely keep my eyes on this furthered discussion.
