Top Five Reasons to Date and/or Marry a Celiac

To wrap up this Celiac Awareness Month I have decided to let my husband Mike (@MikeDRDtoBe on Twitter), an aspiring Dietitian, give his 2 cents about our relationship and make his debut on my blog. He’s a great man who went 100% gluten free at home with me without question when I was diagnosed, and I hope you enjoy this guest post highlighting why dating and/or marry a Celiac is an awesome idea. Although he specifically talks about a Celiac the sentiments are really applicable to anyone on a medically restricted diet.

Hey all! My name is Mike, CC’s husband (aka hubby, the boy, the husband). To commemorate CC’s 5th year of being gluten free and the launch of her new website I have decided to make my writing debut on her blog. It’s been a long road dating, and eventually marrying a Celiac, but even before her diagnosis I was behind her 100%. It was a hard transition for her to start but it has made her a stronger, healthier individual and in my opinion better and more unique. And I couldn’t be any happier for her. So without further delay here are my top five reasons to Date and/or Marry a Celiac:

1. Home cooked meals almost every day

By now you probably know that most meals a Celiac eat are prepared at home in a gluten free environment, by either themselves or a loved one. If you are willing to eat according to their diet (Most of which is delicious and more nutritious then the typical American diet) you can partake of a wholesome home cooked meal just about every day while spending quality time with your significant other (not to mention all the brownie points you’ll get for it!)

2. They know what they want

Whether craving a gluten free pizza or wanting to go for a walk in the park, Celiacs seem to know exactly what they want, both on their plate and in their lives. They are devoted to their diets as well as their dreams and aspirations. I have yet to meet a Celiac who is not successful or who doesn’t give 110%.

3. They’re creative

Do you know how to make cookies or pizza without flour? I bet you a Celiac does. Celiacs are used to making changes and finding solutions to things like this on a daily basis. This keeps their minds thinking and their wits sharp. If you’re looking for someone who can help when you’re stumped and give you a new perspective a Celiac is the way to go.

4. Always prepared

A Celiac is always prepared. You may be able to walk into any restaurant and order anything blindly off the menu but for Celiacs that simply is not so. Because of this a well round Celiac is a everyday survivalist with an arsenal of emergency snacks, backup plans, knowledge, and even phone apps that can help out. For instance if you plan on going on a vacation with a Celiac I can pretty much guarantee you that they have researched just about every gluten free market/restaurant/supermarket in at least a 10 mile radius. Celiacs are built to be looking one step ahead.

5. Always looking for something new

Alas finally the bane of the Celiac, limited options. But don’t fret, new items are always coming onto the market and the keen Celiac will find that metaphorical needle in a haystack of options from a mile away. Celiacs are great at discovering new things and noticing changes and the curious Celiac will always be willing to try something new (or have you try it for them sometimes) whether its a new brand of bagels or a new board game.

So, in closing I guess it’s easy to say that dating and/or marry a Celiac will truly leave you with a great companion. It may be hard at times, and you’ll have your fights like any couple, but in the end so long as you are both supportive of each other your relationship will be stronger as a result of the diagnosis.
