Review and Giveaway: The Everything Guide to Living Gluten Free

Recently, I had the honor of being asked by Jeanine Friesen (of The Baking Beauties) to review her newly released book The Everything Guide to Living Gluten Free (part of the everything series). I was given a free digital sample of the book itself to review (not a full version), and offered a full copy either for myself or as a giveaway for my readers. As you can tell, I’ve opted to do a giveaway of this lovely book. Please see below for my review and giveaway details.

Review:

I had been familiar with Jeanine’s work through the Baking Beauties, and was always thrilled with the writing there. Jeanine is a beautiful writer who makes her work, and the journey towards a healthy and happy gluten free life, an engaging and entertaining experience. This book is just like the blog, and was not without a sense of humor and a personal voice, something often lacking in books that are in the ‘how to’ genre. She also allows you to take ownership of the journey by referring to it as ‘your book’ throughout.

Although I had some technical difficulties with the sample on my Kindle, which I was assured was only because of the formatting of the sample, this book was a easy book to get into. From start to finish Jeanine equips the reader with extensive and detailed knowledge in an understandable and manageable way. She discusses everything from the reasons one might want to go gluten free (debunking in part that gluten free is a ‘fad’ diet helpful for weight loss) to how one might plan a gluten free vacation and more. The last half of the book is recipes, which range from the basic to the complex and are well rounded in nature. Finally, the book makes accessing information easy with it’s extensive appendix (including conversion charts) and the Everything Guides’ standard information boxes that offer further facts, tips, and more in a clear manner through out the book.

Some of my favorite parts of the sample included: Jeanine’s detailed discussion of gluten in chocolate, a history of gluten and it’s grains as we know it, her specific guide towards making a gluten free kitchen (I myself never thought of changing my sugar!), and recipes for Arts and Crafts products. To top is off, Jeanine even approaches the gluten free diet from a psychosocial perspective. She tackles the challenges, fears and possible stages of grief a new gluten free goer might face head on. As a social worker, I was happy to see this addressed as it is often something many feel uncomfortable discussing.

Overall, The Everything Guide to Living Gluten Free is a great book that takes on educating others about a gluten free diet and lifestyle with tact, grace, precision, and a true commitment to making it an easy, happy, and healthy journey! I really feel this is a great resource for anyone going gluten free, or those looking for a bit more guidance.

  1. I’m still new to gluten-free living. We’re doing it for my two kids w/ special needs. I have found the book Cooking for Isaiah by Silvana Nardone to be helpful. http://www.silvanaskitchen.com/

But honestly, Pinterest and other mom blogs are awesome resources too! WOuld love to win this cookbook!

  2. The book would be for me. I started a gluten free diet last August. I’ve met Jeanine and she’s an awesome person and her recipes are just fantastic! I’m a fan and would love to win her book. Otherwise, I’ll have to wait for my bday. 🙁

  3. I like the Celtic Celiac Facebook page! This book would help me along my gluten free journey!

  4. I would love to win because both my daughters, young adults now have been diagnosed as gluten intolerant in the past year. I would love to share it with them as they learn new ways to cook and so I can learn to cook safe healthy meals when they come over to eat

  5. I’ve just been diagnosed with celiac in the past month (ironic that it was during National Celiac Awareness Month), so I’m trying to read everything I can about living gluten-free.

I really need a good cookbook since I’m not much of a baker, but I’m going to need to bake my own breads, buns, etc. I need a cookbook that is easy to follow and doesn’t get too difficult, especially while I’m learning.

  6. I don’t have any favorite cookbooks yet, since I’m just getting started (just diagnosed with celiac disease in May 2013). I’m trying to find out which products I like best (cereals, breads, pastas, etc).

  7. Yes the book would be for me. I am newly gluten free. I am having thyroid issues and after researching this I have found that the gluten could be attacking my thyroid. Also I could really use the help and support while trying to also cut the wheat out of my husbands diet. So please pick me, because I have been going crazy.

    1. Dyanne, thanks for your interest and I am sorry to hear of the complications you and your husband have been facing! Check out some of the sources under the About CD tab at the top of my blog, it discusses some of the ingredients to avoid or include on a gluten free diet. Aside from that if you need any help I do provide gluten free services. Just email me and we can chat: CelticCeliac @ gmail . com

  8. Right now my best liked cook books are a few coconut flour cookbooks I have purchased online and Kindle and also a Kindle book called “the best of Grain Free Meal Plans”.

  9. I would like to win this cookbook for myself. I also facilitate a support group and often share recipes, favorite cookbooks, etc. with my members. I have been gluten free for almost two years.

  10. I would love to win this resourceful book! I have an inflammatory arthritis condition and my doctor would like me to test out a GF diet to see iif my symptoms improve!!

  12. What really caught my eye is your explanation of the psychosocial perspective. I have yet to see that in a gluten free book. After 3 years, I still find myself remorseful of not being able to eat what others are indulging in even though I have turned to looking at the positives of going Gluten Free.
thank you for the opportunity to win a free book filled with so much insight. I have “liked” your facebook page, and also looking forward to the post I read from you. I have been following Jeanine’s blog for quite some time as well.

  13. This is Harry, we’ve been talking just recently about how I’m very new to needing to be gluten free, and still trying to get a handle on how to stay sane without wheat. Thanks for warning me that my GI is the wrong guy to see about this. I don’t like my email being on the internets, but you know how to find me.
