Millet Stir Fry with Chicken and Vegetables (San J Soy Sauce Review)

As part of this post eluded I was asked to do a review of San-J Tamari Gluten Free Soy Sauce for Mambo Sprouts as part of their celebration of Celiac Disease Awareness Month. I am an avid fan of Asian food so this was not an offer I would have passed up, especially since my soy sauce of choice has always been La Choy which was recently tasting a bit too salty for me.

In doing this review I was mentally stuck on making stir fry, which I absolutely love, but realized that I needed to start to think outside of the box and get a bit creative. Part of what I have been trying to do with my diet recently is add in different ‘grains’ other than rice. Thus, for this review I decided to make a millet stir fry and see how it came out with the San J Tamari Soy Sauce. So, here you go:

Cuisine: Gluten Free, Dairy Free
Ingredients
  • 1lb Chicken breasts (cubed)
  • 1 Cup dry millet cooked and chilled overnight (makes 4 servings dry millet)
  • 2 Cups Mini Multi-Colored Sweet Peppers (diced)
  • 1 large crown Broccoli cut to desired size
  • ½ Large Yellow Onion (Diced)
  • 3 Medium Sized Garlic Cloves (Minced)
  • 1½ cups shredded carrots
  • 2 Eggs
  • 2 Tablespoons
  • San-J.s Original Gluten Free Tamari Soy Sauce
  • plus more for seasoning to taste
  • 2 Tablespoons sesame oil plus more for oiling pans
  • Ginger powder to taste
Instructions
  1. Cook the millet the night before and let stand in the refrigerator slightly uncovered overnight. I used Eden Organic Millet
  2. When you are ready to cook, cut your vegetable ingredients to their desired sizes and set aside.
  3. Cut and season your chicken with the ginger powder. In a small skillet heat up 1 tablespoon
  4. San-J.s Original Tamari Soy Sauce
  5. and 1 tablespoon sesame oil. Add chicken and cook on medium while preparing other ingredients.
  6. In a large skillet add the remaining
  7. San-J.s Original Tamari Soy Sauce
  8. and sesame oil and heat. Crack both eggs into the pan and scramble.
  9. Next, add the garlic and onion, cook for approximately 30 seconds and then add the broccoli, peppers and carrots. Saute covered, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes or until broccoli and carrots are becoming slightly soft.
  10. Add the chicken and oil from the other pan. Stir and cook for one minute.
  11. Finally, add the precooked millet. Throughly mix all ingredients and add more soy sauce to taste (I added approximately another Tablespoon). Continue to cook for approximately another 4 minutes and season with ginger powder if desired.
  12. Remove from heat and eat warm for full flavor. Enjoy!

Now, for San-J’s Original Tamari Gluten Free Soy Sauce itself I was very delighted. I have never understood the reasoning behind adding 40-60% wheat to soy sauce! There really isn’t much of a benefit there and San-J’s proves that point. My main issue with La Choy and general soy sauce in the past is that I love the flavor but hate the salt! Even San J.’s original soy sauce is lower in sodium than most soy sauces. The finished flavor was perfect for a stir fry and added just the right amount of flavor without the salt over taste. In addition, I feel that San-J’s had a fuller flavor than most other brands, making it capable of adding flavor where other soy sauces would just mask and take over the flavor of the final product. San- J’s was also thicker in my opinion which made it easier to use less or it, there wasn’t any ‘watered down’ effect.

Finally,  The packing on San-J’s is clear, making it obvious to any shopper that the product is gluten free. I think obvious packaging shows respect from a company for the shopper with ‘special eating needs’. Such dedication to make it clear, and to explain your purpose and benefits so clearly on packaging as San-J does, makes things easier for the shopper and shows a certain level of respect. There is less time involved as well as less stress in searching through the ingredients lists! Who can go wrong with that?

I would definitely try this product again and would highly recommend it!
