Gluten Free News Round-Up: September 22nd-28th

This post is getting out a bit later than I wanted, as yesterday I was in the city all day for a collaborative meeting between Social Justice Solutions (my other writing job) and a few other organizations. But, better late than never.

Doctors Say Changes in Wheat Do Not Explain Rise of Celiac Disease
This is an NPR recording released this week which discusses how doctors do not believe changes in wheat account for the rise in CD, something suggested in the book “Wheat Belly”. It’s about 5 minutes long, and is a pretty interesting listen!

Fibromyalgia and Coeliac Disease: A Media Hype or an Emerging Clinical Problem?
This recent research study looks at the link between Fibromyalgia and Celiac Disease in respect to co-morbidity, as well as whether a gluten free diet can help decrease Fibromyalgia symptoms. The findings suggest no such link in either respect.

Study Reveals no Association Between Celiac Disease and Autism
The above article, one of many posted on the subject, brings about some interesting findings that will likely stir up some negative emotions in the Autism Spectrum Disorder community. The findings suggest that those with ASDs are not at higher risk for Celiac Disease, although they are more likely to have higher antibodies rates that are associated with CD. Although this research is comparable to findings from earlier studies, many families feel that their child might have the Disease or are in need to of following a gluten free diet.

Gluten free Food Making an Appearance in Korea
I always find it interesting how other cultures perceive western diets and diseases, so this article was rather interesting to me. It discusses the rise of gluten free foods in Korea, which is seeming occurring to address rising disease rates and increased Koreans following western diets. I’ve seen this rise myself when I’ve visited Asian food markets, there is a lot more variety!
