CC’s 2013 Gluten Free Holiday Gift Guide

Happy December! Thanksgiving is over, Hanukkah is upon us, and it’s that time again to begin (or finish) your Christmas shopping. So, it must also be time for another Celtic Celiac Gift Guide! I’ll fully admit that I missed the mark on this one, seeing as I missed posting this before Hanukkah. I might not be religious, but I always wind up in a Christmas state of mind around the holidays, so Hanukkah always escapes my memory. Whoops! Anyway, 2013 has definitely been a fun year for gluten free living, so let’s get cracking with my top picks for 2013 gifting! And, for a brush up on some other gift ideas (from books to kitchen goods, and more) check out my 2010, 2011 and 2012 lists!

Gift Baskets, Boxes, or Sets

William Sonoma– William Sonoma has been making a big move to offer gluten free products to customers. Simply visiting their website and putting in ‘gluten free’ will give you over 30 products. This are some of the best:

Taste Guru’s Gluten Free Box of the Month Club MembershipHands down a fantastic idea, there isn’t a single thing wrong with getting a box of gluten free good delivered to your door! There are several options to purchase, based on the # of months you want to gift. BONUS: Gluten Free Deals.com has a sale going on now, and for the next 13 days you can purchase a 3 month subscription for 37$ rather than 100!
– GFree Foodie Box Club MembershipSame as the above, different distributor. This site also offers dairy free and nut free options!

Meal Planner Support

Know some gluten free folks that could use a little help with at home menu planning, or who might be new to gluten free and struggling? Try getting them a subscription to either:
The Fresh 20
  • The Fresh 20’s Gluten Free Meal Planner: Offers recipes, grocery list, and nutritional information. Can be billed annually or every 3 months. Also offer dairy free and vegetarian plans, among other options.
  • The Gluten Freedom Project: Offers an educational series on living gluten free, access to product reviews, recipes, and a weekly menu plan you can have automated or create yourself. Also allows you to choose other dietary restrictions, or requests, to pull up recipes for your needs only.

Books

This is always an easy one, and one I’ve put a focus on a lot in past years. For this year, I only have a few suggestions:
  • Against All Grain By Danielle Walker. Another great book written in an honest and transparent way.
  • The Lavender Cookbook Realistically, this isn’t a gluten free book, but I LOVE Lavender. End of story, it’s totally worth it if you are a lavender lover and have bags full of dried lavender like myself.

De-Stressers

Gluten free living, hell life in general, can be stressful. Consider some gifts that lessen that stress!:
  • Wake up or Energy Lights: Many folks who are gluten free experience seasonal affective disorder, or vitamin d deficiency which can influence mood and energy levels. For those in this situation a wake up or energy light can be very helpful. Check them out on Amazon!
  •  Massages or Spa Visits: This is an obvious one, life is stressful and can be more so when gluten free (especially around the gluten filled holidays). Hook a gluten free person up with some down time!
  • Gift Certificates to local yoga studios: Yoga does the body good, and helps release toxins.

        Other Goodies

There’s always those things that just don’t fit into a particular category, so they get their own!
        • Gluten Free Labels’ Products: This site sells tags, labels, stickers, and flags that let you know exactly what is gluten free. They’re a great for those with shared kitchens, or lots of family and friends gatherings.
        • Kitchen Appliances and gadgets: Being gluten free usually means a lot of home cooking so you can never go wrong with something that makes cooking easier. My current top picks? Slow cooker, electric fondue set, and my immersion blender!

        Gifts That Give Back

I’m a socially conscious social worker, so gifts that give back are always welcome under my tree.

        • Toms for instance is a great product, that gives one pair of shoes or glasses to someone in need when you purchase from them.
        • Heifer international allows you to buy animals for families in someone’s name as a symbolic gift.
        • Krochet Kids teaches individuals living in Peru and Uganda how to crochet so they have a marketable skill, and you can buy the hand crafted hats to keep the mission going.
